CANNES -- Though Cannes' normally frenzied first few days felt less so this year, the arrival of Quentin Tarantino on the Croisette reassured that the 62nd edition of the French fest was off and running.

Tarantino cut a rug on the red carpet at Wednesday's "Inglourious Basterds" preem where he was joined by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

The helmer told Daily Variety that he had prepped for the fest by watching 19 films made by his fellow competition filmmakers.

On the market side of Cannes, fetes for pics in-the-works were held on boats and beaches. Sunday, Ralph Fiennes presided over a lunch on Carlton Beach for his upcoming directorial debut, "Coriolanus," which Icon Intl. is selling, while Orlando Bloom and Colin Firth boarded Larry Ellison's Rising Sun yacht to tubthump Myriad's "Main Street." Ellison's daughter, Megan, is a producer on the film.

On Monday, the VIP crowd congregated on Paul Allen's Octopus yacht, where Mick Jagger cavorted with the industry crowd and former Eurythmics member Dave Stewart played a set.

The Cannes music scene also had a strong presence as Blondie's Debbie Harry took the stage at Belvedere Vodka's IX party; Canadian rockers Anvil unleashed their guitars at an Irish pub; and '80s Brit band Spandau Ballet performed Monday night at Nikki Club.
