HOLLYWOOD -- The L.A. Film Festival launched with that rarest of fest pics: a crowd-pleaser whose action scenes were applauded a half-dozen times during the screening. Not since the first "Matrix" has a pic drawn the kind of preem reaction "Wanted" received Thursday at the Village.

For its part, Universal knows it's holding aces. At the after-party, home entertainment prexy Craig Kornblau said: "What 'The Matrix' did for DVD, this could do for Blu-ray."

U topper Marc Shmuger praised Russian-Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov as "one of the world's great stylists. He's a real visionary who's totally in love with the action genre." Co-topper David Linde said, "You're finally seeing an action film with a fresh perspective."

Producer Marc Platt, who was wandering the party with Bekmambetov, said the pic is "like a good Russian film: Everybody dies and the idea survives."

As for other Russians who may work in mainstream Hollywood, Bekmambetov said: "I'm the first. We will come."
