NEW YORK -- Gotham's heat wave broke just in time for cold-blooded murders in Central Park -- part of the Public Theater's opening-night production of "Hamlet."

At the June 17 gala, Alec Baldwin said he was eager to return to the Rialto. "It's tough to find things you want to do. New York is Wimbledon, very competitive. But I'm hoping," the thesp said.

Public a.d. and helmer Oskar Eustis wore a bowtie with skulls in keeping with the play's macabre theme.

Kathleen Turner said she's in talks to tread the boards in a new comedy. "I'm sick of these drunk and out-of-control women they keep offering me."

Other celebrants in the park included Nora Ephron, Steve Martin, Ethan Hawke, Mike Nichols, Diane Sawyer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jack O'Brien, Tony Kushner and Kim Raver.
