The four-hour program, which featured 24 short films from independent filmmakers as well as guest speakers and musical performances, was broadcast simultaneously around the world via TV, Internet and mobile phones.
"It's a way of knitting together the world's consciousness so we can actually learn together," said Hawn.
Musician Dave Stewart, who served as an adviser and judge for the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards (the winning pics of which were featured at the event), performed "American Prayer," a song he co-wrote with Bono.
Others in attendance included Lawrence Bender, Lisa Ling, Queen Noor of Jordan, Christiane Amanpour and filmmaker and Pangea Day creator Jehane Noujaim.
