NYC's MOMA sets Fassbinder fete
Gotham's MOMA to fete Fassbinder
From Jan. 23 through March 20, MOMA will present all 43 of Fassbinder's film and TV works, including the complete screening of the 15-hour epic "Berlin Alexanderplatz."
Master of ceremonies for the retrospective's opening night will be Udo Kier, who recently appeared in Lars von Trier's "Breaking the Waves," and is best known for his roles in Fassbinder's "The Stationmaster's Wife," "The Third Generation" and "Lili Marlene."
Also attending will be Juliane Lorenz, the editor on Fassbinder's last 12 films and his companion from 1977 until his death in 1982. Lorenz is director of the Berlin-based Fassbinder Foundation and co-organizer of the retrospec-tive.
"The apparent effortlessness of Fassbinder's work was achieved in part by his working on several films with the same technical crew and a group of talented, protean actors," said Laurence Kardish, curator and coordinator of film exhibitions at MOMA, who co-organized the event with Lorenz.
