Neither as extreme nor, for that matter, as interesting as its troublesome title, "Young People Fucking" delivers what it promises, though calling them "people" might be overstating the case. Canuck coitus-interruptus comedy follows four couples and a trio through six stages of sex, with lots of time mid-shag for the thinly sketched characters to gab about their hang-ups and proclivities. Currently in limited release, this uneven but not unpleasant pic won’t get it on theatrically, but might see some action as a racy rental.

Two committed lovers (Kristin Booth, Josh Dean) try to spice up their boring sex life; a naive knockout (Diora Baird) sleeps with a British lothario (Callum Blue); and two best friends (Carly Pope, co-writer Aaron Abrams) get together for a meaningless hook-up. Most tiresome segment features a dude (Ennis Esmer) who likes to watch his hot g.f. (Natalie Lisinska) together with his well-endowed roommate (Peter Oldring). Fast, cheap and more verbally than visually explicit, scribe-helmer Martin Gero’s debut balances frank dirty talk with a generally sweet, optimistic outlook. Perfs are OK, if at times self-conscious; dialogue suffers from some overemphatic repetition. Tech package is pro.

Camera (Deluxe color), Arthur E. Cooper; editor, Michael Banas; music, Todor Kobakov; music supervisor, Vapor; production designer, Diana Abbatangelo; costume designer, Alex Kavanagh. Reviewed on DVD, Anaheim Hills, Calif., Sept. 1, 2008. (In 2007 Toronto, Vancouver film festivals.) MPAA Rating: R. Running time: 90 MIN.
