Fox Goes on Offense with New Newsmag

The Fox Network is prepping a primetime newsmagazine that may launch as early as the summer, according to sources last week at NATPE familiar with the project.

The project was developed by John Tomlin and Bob Young, who were co-executive producers of the recently canceled "A Current Affair."

A pilot of the newsmag received a thumbs-up from Fox Inc. chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Murdoch has long hoped to give Fox a national news presence, though several high-profile attempts -- including "Front Page" and "The Reporters"-- have failed.

Fox Entertainment president John Matoian told Fox affils last week during their annual confab that the weblet was ready to launch a newsmagazine, but gave no details.

Project's format may be to go without an anchor, according to a source familiar with plans for the newsmag.
