Warplanes: Modern Fighting Aircraft

Maris Multimedia; $ 59.95; Macintosh, Windows.

"Warplanes" is aimed squarely at the hard-core military aircraft buff, and hits its target with the robotic accuracy of a Tomahawk missile.

A well-designed set of screen controls (looking like they came right off a piece of military field equipment) steers the user smoothly through a series of functional, no-nonsense screens. The title's centerpiece is its online catalog of 531 different aircraft, whose inventory goes well beyond the strictly military category to include many nominally civilian planes that have at one time or another been adapted to military use.

Printable photos and historical text are available for all craft; some offer video clips, and a few also include an "exploration" that allows the user to do a virtual walkaround of the plane, viewing it from different angles and elevations.

The user can browse through maps and diagrams detailing developments in the tactical and strategic air planning for the Cold War in Europe, Arab-Israeli conflicts, and (of course) the Gulf War.

Combining equal parts of air power documentaries and "Jane's Military Aircraft,""Warplanes" offers up enough military aviation minutiae to satisfy all but the most rabid aircraft enthusiast.
