"Satin Steel," third outing of H.K. wannabe fighting femme Jade Leung, is an uneven but passable entry that should amuse auds tuned into East Asian actioners. Leung, who scored a small cult following with her debut in "Femme Nikita" ripoff "Black Cat," generally delivers the goods in a variety of Singapore and Indonesian locations.
Hand-me-down plotline has Leung as a cop with attitude -- hubby was shot dead on their wedding night -- dispatched to Singapore to help snare a Yank Mafioso arms dealer. In the trim island republic, she's partnered with feisty cop Ellen (Anita Lee), who's thinking of retiring and marrying her dorky b.f.
The scenery picks up when the action moves to Java, where Leung gets involved with the Yank's lawyer (Russell Wong), who finally realizes he's being used by his boss. After some soppy comedy-romance involving the distaff duo, last half-hour is a solid actionfest set in the jungle and atop some volcanoes near Surabaya.
Statuesque ex-model Leung, as a cop with a death wish, partners well with the ditzier Lee. Action sequences and tech credits are solid. On English dubbed print caught, direction is credited to Clifton Ko and Tony Leung, though Chinese sources solely credit Alex Leung Siu-hung, one of several co-directors on the classic "Angel" (1987). Original Chinese title means "Heavy Metal."
