Nebulous scripting and foggy direction sink "Mist," a pretentious drama about two beautiful sisters haunted by family ghosts and a destructive curse. Pic's a major disappointment after helmer Krisztina Deak's tightly controlled Jewish drama "The Book of Esther" four years ago. Foreign sales look murky.
Siblings Olga (Ildiko Toth) and Marta (Adel Kovats) return with their children to the old family seat, a dilapidated mansion in the country that used to be a Communist Party sanitarium. Olga, widowed, soon gets the hots for Marta's artist husband, Viktor; meanwhile, Marta is haunted by the ghost of her nanny (Hedi Temessy) and also discovers some unsettling truths about her wise old uncle, Gabor (George Tabori). Memory and reality start to intertwine, with apocalyptic results.
In the midst of a lot of sitting around talking and reminiscing, and a fog machine that works overtime, pic wastes several talented players (Kovats and veterans Temessy and Tabori) and gets hopelessly tied up in its convoluted script. Laszlo Melis' overheated score seems written for a drama that never reached the screen.
