As a throwback to sex comedy of a less enlightened era, "Poisonous Women" is a cheerfully bawdy example of an almost forgotten genre. It is undoubtedly politically incorrect and may not travel theatrically outside Greece, but it could have video life if well dubbed into English.
Feverish tale concerns a celebrated psychiatrist who specializes in sexual disorders, and the manic people around him. These include his film director brother (who tries to get slasher pix funded by the Greek government) and his nympho wife; his deranged parents; his businesslike, mannish fiancee; and his secretary, who dresses like a nun and openly lusts after him.
Among his stereotypical patients are a man consumed with lust and a frigid woman. But film's just an excuse for frequent scenes of soft-core sexual activity and simple slapstick.
It sounds utterly unpromising, and yet there are quite a few laughs here, with the filmmakers sending up themselves and their audience. Pacing is frantic, the women are attractive, and the comic characters are drawn with the broadest of strokes.
