"Story twist is that Chan, self-styled 'supercop' Chen Chiachu, must go to China to cooperate with the authorities in cracking an international drug ring. His partner turns out to be the beautiful but no-nonsense Director Wang (Michelle Yeaoh). Aside from the contrast between the more disciplined Wang and the freewheeling Chen and some jokes about Hong Kong's upcoming return to Chinese control, differences between the two cultures are not exploited."
Duo eventually must go undercover and infiltrate the gang, forcing them to kill cops to keep their cover. "Somber side doesn't prevail too long and some comic complications occur when Chen's g.f. (Maggie Cheung) suddenly appears at a Malaysian resort unaware of his mission and assuming Chen is cheating on her.
"Of course, Chen's cover is blown, but this just sets up an all-stops-out finale with a motorcycle catapulting onto a train and people dangling from car, train and helicopter.
"All this is executed with a good deal of panache, if not originality, by stunt coordinator Stanley Tong, who also takes over directorial reins from Chan, who helmed the first two 'Police Story' films."
Its original Cantonese dialogue now dubbed into English, pic's original 93 -minute running time has been trimmed by 10 minutes by Dimension.
