Dave's World Nightmare on Maple Street
(Mon.,, 8:30-9 p.m., CBS)
Cast: Harry Anderson, DeLane Matthews, Shadoe Stevens, J.C. Wendel, Zane Carney, Andrew Ducote, Meschach Taylor, Tammy Lauren, Patrick Warburton, Patience Cleveland, Paul Kreppel.
When Julie (Tammy Lauren) suggests that she and Dave's playboy friend and editor Kenny (Shadoe Stevens) get married, Kenny bolts, but doesn't know how to break up with her. ("I'll just stop calling her -- after a month or two, she'll get the hint.")
In the meantime, Julie decides to move into the house next door to Dave and her sister, Beth (DeLane Matthews), soon to be vacated by irascible old Mrs. Grant (Patience Cleveland).
In addition to the entertaining script by Jack Kenny and Brian Hargrove, the episode features funny performances straight through, including those of regulars Meschach Taylor as Dave and Kenny's friend Shel;J.C. Wendel as Dave's ditzy assistant, Mia; and Andrew Ducote and Zane Carney as the Barrys' kids, Willie and Tommy.
Patrick Warburton shines as Mia's boyfriend, the world's clumsiest (and slowest-witted) handyman. And Paul Kreppel appears, all too briefly, as a cocktail lounge entertainer.
Several plot lines integrate gracefully under James Widdoes' direction and remaining tech credits also are fine -- including the main set, a kitchen that looks as though someone actually prepares meals in it.
Camera, Tony Yarlett; editor, Brent Carpenter; art director, James Terry Welden; sound, Gordon Klimuck; music, Jonathan Wolff.
