((Variety Arts Center; 1,000 seats; $ 14 top))
Band: Dean Garcia, Toni Halliday, Steve Monti, Alex Mitchell, Debbie Smith.
The credit goes to front woman Toni Halliday, whose bravado helps make Curve something more than a quintet of shoe-gazers. If not for her take-no-prisoners persona catapulting above the metronomic beats and guitar washings, band's material may have been indistinguishable from some of its also-raved-about contemporaries.
Touring in support of its debut Charisma Record's disc, "Doppleganger," Curve showed the packed Variety Arts Center audience Saturday that the band sets the pace rather than follows it, tossing in some house and industrial music vibes among the pseudo-psychedelia just to keep things interesting.
Halliday was cloaked in the darkness beyond the footlights for most of the set, letting her vocals soundly reverberate throughout the venue. As she did this, her figure was silhouetted against a huge backdrop of rotating lava lamp-like images.
Curve's show is clearly not one show for a fixed-seat venue such as the VAC, as the lack of space kept the fans' enthusiasm in check.
