Director, Steven Soderbergh; writer, Howard A. Rodman; based on a Jonathan Craig story.

Cast: Joe Mantegna, Bonnie Bedelia, Vinessa Shaw, J.E. Freeman, Peter Gallagher, Genia Michaela, Kathy Kinney, Patrick Breen, Wayne Grace, Hank Stone, Norman Large.

Howard A. Rothman's adaptation of a contrived 1952 Jonathan Craig story has good texture and construction but a flat ending.

Joe Mantegna plays a cop with a teenage daughter and a femme partner, Bonnie Bedelia, who picks up underage prosties and tells Mantegna the names of their johns so Mantegna can shake them down. Director Steven Soderbergh keeps a sharp eye on mood and realistic detail, and Bedelia turns in another strong interp.

A good commercial entry, "Quiet Room" boasts Vinessa Shaw sharply playing the daughter and Peter Gallagher on target as a philandering dentist. Mantegna's totally convincing.

Camera, Declan Quinn; editor, Stan Salfas.
