Anthony Newley, a corrupt lender in league with fringe lawyer David Warner and latter's sister Jill Bennett, harasses shopowner Michael Hordern and granddaughter Sarah Jane Varley, both rescued in time by arrival of Paul Rogers, Hordern's wealthy long-lost brother.
Peter Duncan, as Varley's admirer, David Hemmings as a likable boulevardier, Mona Washbourne as a delightful traveling show operator who befriends the fleeing Varley and Hordern, Sarah Webb as a plaintive street urchin, Philip Davis as Newley's whipping boy and Yvonne Antrobus as Newley's long-suffering wife all complement the main plot line. Casting is uniformly excellent.
