First half-hour presents Michael Ontkean and Kate Jackson as a successful young LA couple, he a medic and she a fast-rising TV exec. Then Ontkean meets Harry Hamlin, a gay writer whose good looks provide him with enough easy one-night stands to do without any emotional commitment. Ontkean takes the plunge with Hamlin and finds he likes it, so much so that he quickly knows his marriage is finished.
Working from a story by A. Scott Berg, Barry Sandler has penned a fine, aware screenplay.
Director Arthur Hiller has elicited strong performances from his three principals, and he also carries off the device of having the trio directly address the audience with their thoughts from time to time.
