Lifeguard is an unsatisfying film, of uncertain focus on a 30-ish guy who doesn't yet seem to know what he wants. Script takes Sam Elliott through another Southern California beach summer as a career lifeguard, encountering the usual string of offbeat characters found in the type of made-for-TV feature which this project resembles.

There are, of course, some advantages - like periodic playmate Sharon Weber; Kathleen Quinlan, supposedly underage (but looking far more mature) teenager who has a crush on him; and Anne Archer, long-ago high-school sweetheart now divorced.

Elliott, who has some beefcake value, projects a character who is mostly a passive reactor rather than a person in sure command of his fate.
