Ostensibly a return to the gangster genre, The Lady in Red is in many ways a compendium of variations on the 'woman in jeopardy' format.

The lady of the title gamely struggles through life as a tyrannized daughter, mistreated lover, ill-paid working girl, prisoner in a women's ward, professional hooker and full-fledged gangster, among other roles.

With her sights vaguely set on Hollywood, farm girl Pamela Sue Martin heads first for Chicago, where one mishap after another lands her in prison, then in the employ of classy madam Louise Fletcher.

Lewis Teague, a former second-unit director, guides his large cast reasonably well through John Sayles' craftsmanlike script.
