Essentially a mild, de-sexed remake of the 1977 Brazilian art house hit Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, tale begins with Sally Field starting her life up again after the death, three years earlier, of her talented theatrical hubby (James Caan).

Field opens up her old apartment again and, to the bewilderment of her snobbish mother (Claire Trevor), has decided to marry Egyptologist Jeff Bridges. Shortly before the wedding, however, Caan's ghost decides to join Field back in the apartment, making possible all sorts of 'zany' scenes such as having Caan talk to his former wife while Bridges tries to make love to her.

Almost all the alleged humor stems from Field relating to Caan, whom no one else can hear or see, while she tries to engage in everyday activities.

Supporting performers are simply called upon to register stock reactions to the same joke, over and over again.
