Pic has a predictable, uncomplicated plot. A fashionable ad woman (Yvette Mimieux) leaves her career and her cheating lover behind in LA, destination New York. Along the way, she gets beaten up by juvenile hitchhikers (Robert Carradine is one of them) who steal her car, leaving her stranded in some ambiguous western town where she's promptly thrown in jail on phony charges and raped by a psychotic jailkeeper.

She kills the jailkeeper and is forced to go on the lam with a rowdy but caring inmate (Tommy Lee Jones), a radical country boy who steals 'because everyone is dishonest'.

The after-effects of the rape are handled with more care than usual, and Mimieux turns in a convincing, well-controlled performance.
