Over in the suburbs dwells quiet aerospace engineer Jeff Goldblum whose job is going nowhere while his wife goes too far with another man. Mulling all this over in the middle of the night, Goldblum ambles aimlessly out to the airport where Michelle Pfeiffer has just arrived with six smuggled emeralds.

Apparently, Pfeiffer has performed this chore for one or more boyfriends and the promise of some cash, but she is hardly prepared for the four killers awaiting her arrival. Fleeing them, she leaps into Goldblum's car and from then on, it's just one misadventure and murder after another.

In pursuit of the jewels are a series of cameo-plus parts handled by Irene Papas, Roger Vadim, David Bowie and a band of Iranian zanies that includes director John Landis himself.

The film itself tries sometimes too hard for laughs and at other times strains for shock. Goldblum is nonetheless enjoyable as he constantly tries to figure out just what he's doing in all of this.
