A superbly-wrought gem about the romantic illusions people, especially would-be lovers, search for in one another, with Julie Christie ideally cast as the seeker and Michael Sarrazin as her fantasy.

Christie, the daughter of an incurably romantic and frequently married Swiss financier, played with charming elan by Adolfo Celi, is living a life of quiet domesticity in Rome when she is invited by papa to attend his latest nuptial.

Her real attraction in Geneva is Celi's calculating description of his house guest from San Francisco, a tall, handsome 'likeable maniac'. At the airport, she spots a giant poster of Sarrazin, an auto-ball champion, and in her imagination he becomes the physical embodiment of her romantic fantasies about Gregory.
