The storm blows fiercely but the love story doesn't match its power in Hurricane. Dino De Laurentiis' epic reportedly delivered with a $22 million negative cost.

Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall's novel, The Hurricane, was filmed relatively faithfully in 1937 by John Ford.

The context and conflicts in the new production have been altered significantly. Script sets the tale in Eastern Samoa, circa 1920, with Jason Robards lording it over the natives on behalf of the US navy. The female love interest is now a white woman, with Mia Farrow sailing in from Boston to see her commander father, but gradually becoming involved with the young chieftain of a nearby island (Dayton Ka'ne).

The hurricane itself, which runs 25 minutes and was created entirely on location in Bora Bora by a special effects team led by Glen Robinson, who performed the same function on the 1937 production, Aldo Puccini and Joe Day, is impressive enough.
