Customers led to expect a werewolf pic in the tradition of Joe Dante's invigorating The Howling are in for a disappointment; this is a generally lackluster horror item [based on the novel Howling II by Gary Brandner].

Tale opens with the funeral of a femme newsperson; in attendance is Christopher Lee as an expert on werewolves. He advises that the dead woman was such a creature, and is joined by her brother (Reb Brown) and colleague (Annie McEnroe) on a trip to Transylvania to destroy the werewolf queen (Sybil Danning), who is actually Lee's sister.

Despite fancy editing tricks and a few touches of grim humor, suspense is woefully lacking, as Danning is an unformidable villain (she looks as though she's stepped out of a soft-core sex pic) and the plot development is strictly by-the-numbers. Apart from a few moments shot in LA, pic was lensed in Czechoslovakia, but relatively little is made of the settings. Lee brings a tired authority to the role.
