This is not a picture for anybody who doesn't like Willie Nelson. But the picture adroitly blends his musical performances with a gently dramatic acting job in an old-fashioned love story.

Picture catches Nelson at that point in his career around 1970 when his touring band was wildly popular in Texas and nearby regions, but he had yet to break out with the big hit that would make him nationally famous.

Dyan Cannon and Joey Floyd nicely set up Nelson's approaching conflict as the wife and son who wait affectionately at home for him to finish his periodic tours.

Slim Pickens is right on target as the guitar-picking sidekick. Amy Irving is near perfect as the woman who has adored Nelson since girlhood.
