First Love is a sensitive and melancholy film about the impact of romance on college student William Katt when he falls for coed Susan Dey.

Harold Brodkey's New Yorker story, Sentimental ed ucation, has been adapted into a script which takes Katt through the highs and lows of commplicated young love.

But an unfortunate element in the story is the never-ending pall of doom that hangs over everything. From frame one the mood is a downer, which dampens the several nice bright moments of exuberance and telegraphs the coming climactic ambiguity.

Katt is excellent. So is Dey, who has an appealing charisma of vivacious sensuality.
