The Eiger Sanction, based on the novel by Trevanian, focuses on Clint Eastwood, a retired mountain climber and hired assassin, being recalled from retirement by head of a secret intelligence organization for another lethal assignment.

Pic takes its title from the leader's euphemism for assassination, to be carried out on Switzerland's Eiger Mountain during an international team's climb.

To condition himself for the ascent Eastwood flies to the Arizona ranch of George Kennedy, an old climbing friend, who puts him through his paces in the magnificent reaches of Monument Valley.

Eastwood, who also directs and according to studio did his own mountain climbing without doubles, manages fine suspense. His direction displays a knowledge that permits rugged action.
