Gabriel Byrne is Sir Hugo, an ex-guards officer, now in business. He has a lovely wife (the delectable Amanda Donohoe) of whom he's extremely jealous, suspecting her of having an affair with an Argentine business colleague.
One night, after a drunken dinner with his friends, Hugo is driving someone else's car when he hits a young woman, fatally injuring her. He and his friends leave her to die, though one of them, Jamie (Douglas Hodge), the car owner, wants to report the accident.
Jamie, who's having an affair with Hugo's sister Rebecca (Sadie Frost), threatens to spill the beans, and the friends are forced to silence him.
Donohoe gives another hot performance as the elegant Virginia whose name belies her actions. Veteran Michael Hordern is amusing as Hugo's titled father, though comedy actor Ian Carmichael is totally wasted as the family butler.
