Story is of the clash between sophisticated law enforcement and frontier-style simplistics, which is perhaps one of the major internal American problems. Clint Eastwood stars as a laconic, taciturn stranger, this time a deputy sheriff from Arizona in New York City.

Herman Miller's story establishes Eastwood as a cold, selfish desert lawman sent to NY to extradite hippie Don Stroud, whose Arizona offense is never mentioned. Lee J. Cobb, a city detective, tries to explain to Eastwood that things are done differently.

Susan Clark is very good as a probation officer who falls for Eastwood. Tisha Sterling does well as Stroud's hippie girl friend. Betty Field has an excellent scene as Stroud's mother, impact being second only to Cobb's terrific work.
