Candy is a mixed bag of goodies. Based on a novel [by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg] which was a successful satire on pornographic stories, film is at times hilarious, delightfully outrageous, silly, flat, and routine. Director Christian Marquand utilizes a Buck Henry adaptation, a very fine comedy sexpot newcomer (Ewa Aulin) and a strong cast of cameo stars and character thesps.

Candy tells of the unbelievably naive and innocent sexpot heroine, whose adventures were setups for the de rigeur sexual incidents found in most pornography.

The continuing characters are excellent. Aulin's performance in the title role is a delight. John Astin plays both her square father and lecherous uncle, and he is terrific. Elsa Martinelli also is excellent as Aunt Livia.

In retrospect, a prime flaw in Candy is the over-exposition of the vignettes. Nearly every episode suffers from the temptation to get one or two more gags out of the material before cutting.

Richard Burton, first cameo star, comes across as the most effective. Ringo Starr, as the Mexican gardener, is very good.
