The core of the story centers on an obsessive bird egg collector's passion to secure specimens of a newly discovered breed of bald eagle. As the bird is protected by law, he has to hire a noted climber (Powers Boothe) to illegally pilfer the shells. However, apart from the physical danger of reaching their lofty peak, he must contend with their protector, a reclusive mystery man (Rutger Hauer) who inhabits a secluded island.
Also figuring into the story is the unstated emotional bond between Hauer and the storekeeper, played by Kathleen Turner, and her son who worships his independent ways.
