Bobby Deerfield is a brilliantly unusual love story, told in a European fashion which makes the Sydney Pollack film at first irritating, then intriguing, finally most rewarding and emotionally satisfying.
Stars Al Pacino and Marthe Keller are both excellent as shallow jet-set floaters who become whole persons in their romance. Foreign location footage is lavish.
Erich Maria Remarque's novel, Heaven Has No Favorites, served as the basis for screenplay. Pacino plays the title character, a Newark boy whose interest in car racing has propelled him into international celeb status where he'd rather forget his origins. Keller is a wealthy and elusive character, manic in her life style because of terminal illness.
