The Blue Lagoon is a beautifully mounted production, a low-keyed love story stressing the innocent eroticism of Brooke Shields and newcomer Christopher Atkins. This is the second adaptation of the 1903 novel by Henry DeVere Stacpoole about two shipwrecked children who grow from childhood in an isolated South Seas paradise.

Producer-director Randal Kleiser takes the pair through puberty and into parenthood with a charming candor that stresses natural, instinctive sexual development without leering at it.

Their romance is enhanced by Nestor Almendros' exquisite photography (and Basil Poledouris' score), as is the stunning beauty of the Fiji island where it was filmed.
