Gene Wilder's frantic routines can't compensate for Richard Pryor's sadly depleted energy in Another You, and producer Ziggy Steinberg's feeble script is given slapdash direction by the man who replaced Peter Bogdanovich on what is billed a 'film by Maurice Phillips' (the best joke in the film).

The setup isn't without promise, as the 'mentally challenged' Wilder is released from a sanitarium into the dubious care of Hollywood street hustler Pryor, who's been ordered to do community service as a condition of his parole.

Some amiable, if predictable, gags about Wilder's readjustmant to the sleazy outside world give way all too quickly to tiresome plot mechanics as Stephen Lang and Mercedes Ruehl maneuver to use the gullible Wilder to impersonate a missing brewery heir.

The depressing mood is worsened by the murky color scheme of production designer Dennis Washington and lenser Victor J. Kemper, who somehow manage to make Wilder's BevHills manse look almost as unattractive as Hollywood Boulevard.
