George Kennedy, who stars with Robert Mitchum, plays the film mostly for comedy, and Mitchum's deadpan performance might be interpreted in same lineage. Laughs overshadow the serious moments.

Story concerns two relics of the Old West, an aging marshal no longer wanted by his townsmen and a similarly-aging outlaw far past his prime. Onetime enemies, they now combine to thwart the efforts of a band of young outlaws to rob a train of a large shipment of money.

Yarn takes its motivation from Mitchum, retired against his will with a gold watch and pension, taking action against the raid he knows is coming, but which pompous mayor Martin Balsam brushes aside as impossible.

Both Mitchum and Kennedy imbue their roles with sound values.
