Basic story is the escape and capture of a gang of post-Civil War vagabonds. Dean Martin heads an outlaw group which includes Will Geer, Tom Heaton, Sean McClory and Clint Ritchie.
Pre-title bank heist, in which Raquel Welch's husband is killed, lands the group in George Kennedy's jail, awaiting hanging by itinerant executioner Guy Raymond. Stewart, Martin's older brother who always has rescued him from mistakes, takes Raymond's place in order to effect gang's escape. Having accomplished this, the upright Stewart then robs a bank. This opening action, well developed, takes 40 minutes.
Welch is got up to look like a Mexican Sophia Loren. Her makeup is distressingly false-looking, her accent moreso. Of Kennedy, she says at one point, 'hee ees a good mahn.'
