Bits of Dr Syn (1937), with George Arliss, and The Ghost Train (1931) blend happily with amusing dialog and situations [story by Sidney Gilliatt] usually associated with Will Hay and his two stooges, the fat boy and old man.
A village police station becomes the center of interest when it's discovered there's been no crime there for over 10 years. The sergeant (Hay) in command of two subordinates (Graham Moffatt, Moore Marriott), hearing they re likely to be transferred or fired because of lack of 'business', plans to frame one or two cases.
Planting a keg of brandy on the beach, to stage a smuggler's racket, they discover another, real contraband keg. From then on it's a wild chase between the three witnits and a band headed by the local squire (Charles Oliver) which is carrying on a lucrative haul.
