A flimsy love story which never really catches fire emerges from an Antonio Leonviola original which James Salter has shaped for the screen in this disappointing Sidney Lumet effort.

Omar Sharif plays a Roman lawyer who falls for a colleague's fiancee, a mannequin played by Anouk Aimee, and eventually marries her, undeterred by his pal's fear that she's secretly a high-priced call girl. Soon, however, suspicion begins to gnaw and he begins to tail his spouse.

Flat writing and an over-rigid performance by Sharif in a crucial role, which at times skirts the laughable, seriously flaw what might otherwise have been an intriguing love tale cum suspenser.

Instead, the love affair is never convincingly established from the start, and with the exception of a largely wasted contribution by Aimee the film drags along to its mellerish windup.
