India has decided not to enter Oscar's next foreign-lingo award competition, just two years after "Lagaan" was nominated. "Lagaan" was India's third Oscar nomination.
The Film Federation of India jury, headed by helmer Harmesh Malhotra, decided Friday that none of the six Bollywood pics put forward this go-round made the grade.
Among them were Rakesh Roshan's sci-fi blockbuster "Koi Mil Gaya" (Found Someone), Prakash Jha's "Gangajal" (Holy Water) and Anant Balani's "Joggers Park."
Meanwhile, the Norwegian Oscar committee will submit Bent Hamer's "Kitchen Stories," which screened in Directors Fortnight at Cannes.
Produced by Hamer's own Bulbul Film, it has so far been sold to more than 30 countries, including the U.S., by French international distributor Celluloid Dreams.
Although backed by Swedish coin, Finnish director Klaus Haro's first feature "Elina" has been chosen as the Finnish contender for Oscar consideration. Pic won the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Fest's Kinderfilmfest and was named best feature at Montreal's Children's Film Festival.
