Kilmer's off to Morocco for 'Alex'

Thesp joins Farrell, Jolie in pic

After playing the Lizard King for Oliver Stone in "The Doors," Val Kilmer has been tapped by the director to play the Macedonian king Philip in "Alexander," the Intermedia/Warner Bros. drama that begins filming Sept. 22 in Morocco.

Kilmer will play the father of Alexander (Colin Farrell) and the husband of Olympias (Angelina Jolie).

Thomas Schuehly, Moritz Borman, Jon Kilik and Iain Smith are producing.

Kilmer has been at the Toronto Film Festival promoting the Lions Gate pic "Wonderland," directed by James Cox. Kilmer stars as John Holmes in pic that explores the porn legend's involvement in a quadruple homicide.

The actor then will head to Morocco to prepare for "Alexander," even as his reps sort out the particulars of the formal offer made to him over the weekend. Kilmer also has been set for a reteam this fall with his "Heat" director Michael Mann on the Stuart Beattie-scripted DreamWorks drama "Collateral."

Lensing of "Alexander" moves to London Nov. 10 and then wraps in early January in Thailand. Warner Bros. is expected to release the pic in the U.S. in November 2004, while I.S. Distribution, the joint venture between Moritz Borman's Intermedia and Patrick Wachsberger's Summit, is selling territories around the world.

If Stone sticks to that production schedule, his film will precede the rival film being prepped by producer Dino De Laurentiis for Universal and DreamWorks, with Baz Luhrmann directing Leonardo DiCaprio.
