On the eve of high school graduation, bright but unremarkable student John Cusack decides he's just got to go out with 'Miss Priss' (Ione Skye). Skye is doted upon by her divorced father (John Mahoney) and is headed for studies in England on a fellowship.
Cusack, who bunks with his nephew and sister (an unbilled appearance by real-life sister Joan Cusack), starts a friendship that slowly grows into something more. Conflict rears its head in a conventional way when Skye becomes torn between leaving for England and staying with her boyfriend.
Cusack and Skye's relationship develops nicely and believably, but Crowe has not written an entirely convincing character for the latter to play. Pic also has considerable structural problems, as many scenes feel unachieved.
Lois Chiles (unbilled) plays a scene as Skye's mother, and Eric Stoltz pops up briefly at a teen party.
