Norway boosts funds to local films

Country aims for at least 25 features per year

STOCKHOLM -- Norway will add $10 million more in coin to the domestic film industry to reach a total of $120 million in 2009, according to a government budget released Tuesday.

The country is setting targets of at least 25 features per year, of which five need to be docs and five youth films.

The department of culture said in a statement: "The goal is also that there should be at least 3 million tickets sold to local films during 2009, which means 25% of the total admissions."

Since 2005, the Norwegian government has upped state support to the film industry each year with a corresponding rise of 25% from 15%.

Nina Refseth, head of the Norwegian Film Institute, said: "We are very pleased. Now we get the possibility to further develop the Norwegian cinema and maintain its high quality."
