PBS' 'Moyers,' 'Lens' take two top honors

NEW YORK -- Pubcasting was the big winner at the 29th annual news and documentary Emmy Awards, taking a total of 10 wins.

CBS was the first runner-up, netting five Emmys, three of which went to "60 Minutes."

The three most prestigious awards were shared between PBS and ABC. Alphabet's "World News with Charles Gibson" won best story in a regularly skedded newscast. PBS' "Bill Moyers Journal" won best report in a news magazine, and PBS' "Independent Lens" took best docu.

Lifetime achievement awards were given to docu maker Ken Burns, longtime CBS newsman Bob Schieffer and the family of the late Tim Russert, former moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press."

Schieffer gave an impassioned defense of a free press and its role in a democracy.

Tributes to several broadcasters who have died recently -- Jim McKay, William F. Buckley Jr., Tony Snow and Ike Pappas, among others -- were part of the evening as well.

Aljazeera English picked up two noms but didn't win in either category.

ABC nabbed four Emmys, National Geographic Channel tool three, and the Detroit Free Pree, History Channel and NBC each took two.

Cfr.org, Discovery Channel, HBO/Cinemax, HDNet, mercurynews.com and Smithsonian Channel each took one award.
