Garcia's 'Ploning' joins foreign-language race
"Ploning," a debut feature helmed by Dante Nico Garcia, has been selected as The Philippines candidate for the foreign-language Oscar it was announced Tuesday.Pic was selected by a special committee of the Film Academy of the Philippines.
Film is the idyllic 1982-set story of island life and the secret love of a beautiful woman and a fisherman from her past. Starring Judy "Juday" Ann Santos, it was produced by new shingle Panoramanila.
"Ploning" was previously selected for the Paris Cinema fest in July and is currently on limited commercial release in Canada.
In winning selection "Ploning" beat out other more anticipated pics including "Caregiver," "Tribu," and "Endo."
Selection committee was headed by Eddie Romero and also included Jose Carreon, secretary of the Directors Guild of the Philippines; William Mayo, president of the Philippine Motion Picture Directors Association; Johnny Delgado, chairman of the Actors' Workshop Foundation; Pablo S. Gomez, president of the Screenwriters' Guild of the Philippines; and Manny Morfe, president of the Productions Designers Guild of the Philippines.
