BSkyB to bow arts channel

Network to kick off on Oct. 20

In what some may regard as a challenge to the BBC, Blighty's dominant paybox BSkyB is launching a second arts channel as it attempts to move upscale and win kudos from politicians and other opinion formers.

Beginning Oct. 20, the existing Sky Arts channel will be split into Sky Arts 1 (focusing on contempo and cult programming including live rock concerts and documentaries) and Sky Arts 2 (opera, classical music, fine art and dance), with Sky Arts HD featuring programs from both channels.

They will jointly air 36 hours of arts shows a day, according to the News. Corp satcaster.

Sky managing director of entertainment Sophie Turner Laing said: "Arts is integral to the Sky platform, and we now have the wealth and breadth of diverse arts content to warrant two dedicated arts channels.

"At a time when other broadcasters' commitment to the arts is open to question, we firmly believe in giving our customers the best choice."

Subjects covered in Sky Arts' fall schedule include painters Francis Bacon and Edward Seago and rockers Iggy Pop and Moby; a nightly concert will feature performers including the late Johnny Cash and the Who.

The revamp means that Sky Arts will spend more coin on content including original commissions and acquisitions.

BSkyB's decision to beef up its arts coverage comes as U.K. media policymakers prepare to publish an important review of public service broadcasting.
