George Carlin gets nod for 'Bad for Ya'

Some people sleep their way to the top; "Jimmy Kimmel Live" f***ed its way to two Emmy nominations.

Two of the latenight gabfest’s four Emmy noms went to the show’s infamous clip "I’m F***ing Matt Damon," starring Damon and Kimmel’s ex-galpal, Sarah Silverman. Another went to Kimmel’s response, "I’m F***ing Ben Affleck."

Both clips were nommed in the new category for picture editing of clip packages for talk, performance, award or a reality-competition program (yes, there’s really a category for that).

Silverman’s "I’m F***ing Matt Damon" tune also picked up a nom for original music and lyrics -- competing with two songs from "Flight of the Conchords," a "Mad TV" parody -- and a song from the Disney cartoon "Phineas and Ferb." Try explaining that to your kids.

Among the other oddities and interesting noms from this year’s Emmy roster:

"Family Guy" doubled down by entering itself in the comedy series category and submitting its "Star Wars"-themed special "Blue Harvest" in the hourlong animation competish. It didn’t land a comedy nom but did secure a mention in the animation race.
Emmy has a chance to honor comedy legend George Carlin posthumously. The late standup, who died earlier this month, was nommed in the variety, music or comedy special category for his HBO entry "George Carlin: It’s Bad for Ya!"
"The Tonight Show" was completely shut out of this year’s competish, but all is not lost for host Jay Leno. Leno’s webcast "Jay Leno’s Garage" is up for an Emmy in the special class/short-format nonfiction program category.
Gone but not forgotten, canceled shows earning noms include "Canterbury’s Law," "Creature Comforts," "Jericho," "Kid Nation," "New Amsterdam" and "Pirate Master."
The Academy continued its weblet-ignoring strategy, handing just two nominations to the CW (both in the sound-editing category), up from last year’s sole nomination.
Once upon a time, thesps who wanted to score an Emmy nom made sure to stop by "The Practice." These days, they’d be wise to sign up for a spot on "30 Rock." The laffer earned four of the five mentions in the guest comedy actor category and three of the six nommed for guest comedy actress.
This was the first year the TV Acad split its special class categories (in which programs don’t compete against one another but are deemed Emmy-worthy or not) into subgroups. In the newly created awards program category, both the 80th Annual Academy Awards and the 61st Annual Tony Awards are up for the Emmy -- but the 50th Annual Grammy Awards didn’t make the cut.
Most confusing-sounding new award category: "outstanding special class -- not-exclusively-made-for-television variety, music, comedy event programs." Award refers to events that weren’t staged for TV but happened to be televised. There’s just one entrant this year: PBS’ "Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival Chicago."
