Eva Mendes eyes 'Bad Lieutenant'
Actress joins Nicolas Cage in Herzog's remake
Eva Mendes is in negotiations to star opposite Nicolas Cage in the Werner Herzog-helmed reimagining of "Bad Lieutenant" for Nu Image/Millennium Films.The 1992 original pic starred Harvey Keitel as a corrupt cop investigating a nun's rape. It was produced by Edward R. Pressman and directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund.
Billy Finkelstein penned the updated version, and Pressman is producing alongside Stephen Belafonte, who brought Finkelstein to the project. Alan and Gabe Polsky, who financed development of the project, also produce.
Lensing will begin in late summer.
Nu Image/Millennium's Avi Lerner, Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson are exec producing with Elliot Rosenblatt and Alessandro Camon. Randall Emmett and Cage's Saturn Films also produce.
Mendes and Cage previously starred together in the comicbook-based actioner "Ghost Rider."
Mendes will next be seen next in ensemble comedy "The Women" and Frank Miller's "The Spirit."
She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Jason Sloane.
