'Sex and the City' bows overseas

Comedy nets $4.8 million in U.K. and France

"Sex and the City" has started smartly in its overseas launch with an estimated $4.8 million on its opening day in the U.K. and France.

"Sex" turned in an impressive Brit launch Wednesday with $4 million at 460 through Entertainment and took in another $800,000 at 540 in its French debut via Metropolitan.

Pic will launch today in Germany and Singapore. It debuts Friday in Italy along with the U.S. launch.

International audience showed serious attraction two years ago for "The Devil Wears Prada," another high-profile comedy with plenty of fashion, as foreign biz topped $200 million.
