Glickman talks antipiracy in India

MPAA president aims to unite film industries

Motion Picture Assn. prexy Dan Glickman was in India to press the twin messages of industry cooperation and antipiracy.

"It is key that Bollywood and Hollywood join hands to fight their biggest common enemy and their biggest common competitor, piracy," Glickman said Monday at a New Delhi confab organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Glickman cited several examples of new business relationships between Hollywood and Indian studios in movie production and distribution sectors. But he played down any notion that Hollywood is muscling its way in. "Hollywood studios recognize that cultural relevance is the key to the success of the Indian film industry," he said.

His appeal to the Indian industry to do more on piracy was accompanied by data suggesting that the movie biz lost $186 million to piracy in India last year and that Indian studios were the biggest losers, missing out on $176 million in revenue.
